Jakarta: Floods and landslides have forced over 8,000 people to flee their homes in East Nusa Tenggara Province after Tropical Cyclone Seroja hit the region.
The Jakarta Tropical Cyclone Warning Center (TCWC) under the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) detected the Tropical Depression (TD) 99S on Friday and issued an early warning on Saturday.
On Monday, the Tropical Depression was reported to have strengthened and was named Tropical Cyclone 26S (SEROJA).
"As of Monday at 23.00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB), 2,019 households or 8,424 people have been evacuated," said the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Raditya Jati in a press release issued on Tuesday.
According to the spokesman, the death toll from the impact of the tropical cyclone has risen to 128, while 72 people are still missing.
"67 people died in Lembata, 49 died in East Flores, and 12 died in Alor," the BNPB official stated.
