Jakarta: Jakarta Environment Agency head Andono Warih has said that the Jakarta provincial government can fine businesses in shopping centers, supermarkets and traditional markets that still provide single-use plastic bags.
According to Andono, business owners who deliberately provide disposable plastic shopping bags in their trading places will be sent written warnings.
If the violators do not heed the written warnings three times, they will be fined in stages starting from Rp 5,000,000 until Rp 25,000,000.
"If they do not pay the fines, their permits will be revoked," Andono said here on Wednesday.
The Gubernatorial Regulation number 142/2019 on Obligations to Use Environmentally Friendly Shopping Bags in Shopping Centers, Supermarkets and Traditional Markets requires all managements of shopping centers, supermarkets and traditional markets to apply the use of environmentally friendly shopping bags for all businesses.
In addition, the gubernatorial regulation also requires them to promote the use of environmentally friendly shopping bags to consumers.
