Jakarta: President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has stated that the government is currently developing integrated transportation system such as LRT, MRT and elevated railway.
“The cost is high but we don’t have any other options,” the Cabinet Secretary's official website quoted President Jokowi as saying.
On Wednesday morning, President Jokowi attended the inaugration ceremony of Bakauheni-Terbanggi Besar toll road in Lampung province. On that occasion, President Jokowi talked about his experience using commuter train from Tanjung Barat Station to Bogor Station.
He said that the train was very crowded that the passengers could not even move. He noted that many passengers asked him to provide more trains.
“That is why we are building LRT and MRT because the city needs (the public transportation system),” President Jokowi added.
The central goverment has ordered regional leaders in Jakarta, West Java and Banten provinces to improve transportation infrastructures in Greater Jakarta area. It has allocated funds to help resolve transportation issues in Jakarta and its satellite cities.
The first phase of Jakarta MRT will connect Bundaran Hotel Indonesia in Central Jakarta and Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta. It is scheduled to be opened in mid-March.
The first phase of Jakarta LRT will connect Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta with Rawamangun in East Jakarta. It is expected to be fully operational this year.
The Greater Jakarta region comprises Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi. The area has a population of more than 28 million people.
It is the most populous urban area in Indonesia. It is also the center of government and economy of the country.
The inaugiration ceremony of Bakauheni-Terbanggi Besar toll road was also attended by State-Owned Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno, Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, Agrarian and Spatial Planning Minister Sofyan Djalil, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, and Governor of Lampung Ridho Ficardo.
