Jakarta: Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Lieutenant General Doni Monardo appealed to regional officials to be more alert. He hopes regional leaders can help prevent the impact of seasonal change.
According to him, regional officials play a major role in helping BNPB. One way is to routinely monitor rainfall and flood gates.
"If need be, sleep less. We must be vigilant," Doni said at the Ministry of Defense Building, Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat, Gambir, Central Jakarta on Thursday, January 23, 2020.
He said regional officials has been equipped with detection tools and early warning systems. The seriousness of local officials also determines whether or not the disaster prevention will be effective.
"Without it, it will be difficult," Doni said.
BNPB, he said, had released a letter about the early warning systems on Thursday, October 31, 2019. BNPB had also invited representatives of 10 provinces including the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI), National Police (Polri), and local agencies.
Doni said that so far the early warning systems have been quite effective. However, he asked all parties not to be complacent.
"But how ready can a region be so that the probability of the loss of property and loss of life becomes smaller," he concluded.
