Jakarta: Central Bangka regent candidate Ibnu Soleh succumbed to coronavirus disease 2019 (covid-19), according to the General Elections Commission (KPU) commissioner Evi Novida Ginting.
"Ibnu Soleh, a Central Bangka regent candidate, passed away," said the KPU official in a written statement on Sunday.
After testing positive for coronavirus, the local politician was undergoing treatment at Bhakti Timah Hospital, Pangkalpinang City, Bangka Belitung Province.
Based on information from the KPU, a total of three regional leader candidates have died after previously battling covid-19.
Besides the Central Bangka regent candidate, Berau regent candidate Muharram passed away on September 22. He tested positive for coronavirus on September 9.
Meanwhile, Bontang mayor candidate Adi Darma passed away on October 1. He tested positive for the virus on September 24.
On December 9, the 2020 Simultaneous Regional Elections will take place in nine provinces, 37 cities and 224 regencies. Campaign activities will be held from september 26 to December 5.
