Jakarta: A whirlwind struck two areas in Pontianak, West Kalimantan Province, leaving a path of destruction and causing damage to some 300 homes on Friday, Pontianak Mayor Edi Rusdi Kamtono stated.

"Based on the latest data that I received, some 300 houses incurred light, moderate, or severe damage," the mayor stated here on Monday.

West Pontianak and North Pontianak were the areas affected by the whirlwind, he remarked.

The Pontianak municipal administration will provide building materials, such as zinc and rafters, to residents whose homes incurred damage owing to the strong wind.

The whirlwind also led to power outage in several areas affected by the disaster.

The mayor urged the residents of Pontianak City to be cognizant of likely rains accompanied by whirlwind.

"It is possible that the same occurrence can also be observed in other regions," he stated.

In the meantime, major floods swamped parts of the provinces of Southeast Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, and West Papua. In North Luwu, South Sulawesi, flash floods claimed 32 lives and rendered 16 others missing. (antara)
