Jakarta: The Ministry of Transportation has grounded one Garuda Indonesia plane and two Sriwijaya Air planes due to having cracks on the aircraft.
The grounded aircraft are Boeing 737 New Generation (B737NG) aircraft.
Based on the results of inspections conducted by the Directorate of Airworthiness and Aircraft Operation (DKPPU) as of October 10, 2019, there were cracks on one of the three B737NG aircraft owned by Garuda Indonesia that are older than 30 thousand flight cycle (FC).
Besides Garuda, there were also cracks on two of the five B737NG planes owned by Sriwijaya Air that have reached more than 30 thousand FC.
Meanwhile, Batik Air and Lion Air do not have B737NG planes that are older than 30 thousand FC.
According to Director of Airworthiness and Operation of Aircraft Avirianto, from the results of the inspection of B737NG aircraft operating in Indonesia that had an age of more than 30 thousand FC as of October 10, 2019, there were cracks on a total of three aircraft.
"Of the three B737NG aircraft that were found to be cracked, the aircraft were grounded, waiting on further recommendations from Boeing," he said in his written statement on Wednesday, October 16, 2019.
Furthermore, he added, DKPPU asked operators of B737NG aircraft, namely Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Batik Air, and Sriwijaya Air to regularly inspect their aircaft every 3,500 FC.
"Currently the airlines operating B737NG aircraft are Garuda Indonesia with 73 aircraft, Lion Air with 102 aircraft, Batik Air with 14 aircraft, and Sriwijaya Air with 24 aircraft," Avi said.
