Jakarta: President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has asked Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto to provide the latest weaponry to anticipate future wars. He does not want to procure obsolete defense equipment.
"Do not let the procurement of defense equipment be done with technology that is outdated and not in accordance with future military trend," Jokowi told a limited cabinet meeting at the Presidential Office, Jakarta on Friday, November 22, 2019.
According to President Jokowi, as the largest archipelagic country in the world, Indonesia must be able to become a country with powerwul military in the region.
However, besides purchasing military equipment from other countries, the procurement of defense equipment must be supported by the domestic defense industry.
“By involving both SOEs and the private sector, so we can reduce dependence on defense equipment imports from abroad," he said.
Jokowi also asked Prabowo to ensure transfers of technology agreements. He said that human resources of the national defense industry must strengthened through these agreements. He also warned that the procurement of defense equipment should not be aimed just for budget absorption.
"The goal is a strategic partnership to improve the independence and competitiveness of the nation so that we have the ability to produce defense equipment," he stressed.
