Student Executive Boards Refuse to Meet President

Damar Iradat • 27 September 2019 17:05
Jakarta: The Alliance of Indonesian Student Executive Boards has refused an invitation to meet with President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta.

"The meeting should be watched directly by the public and broadcasted by national television channels," the group's coordinator Muhammad Nurdiansyah said in a written statement released on Friday, September 27, 2019.

Nurdiansyah claimed student executive boards and protesters did not demand a meeting with President Jokowi. He urged President Jokowi to fulfill students' demands as soon as possible.

"We have learned from previous meetings and we do not want to be used by the political elite," he added.

President Jokowi initially planned to hold a meeting with college students today. He wanted to directly hear the students' opinions and views.

"Especially the representatives of student executive bodies," President Jokowi said here on Thursday, September 26, 2019.

Thousands of college students held a massive rally in front of the Parliament Complex on Tuesday, September 24, 2019. The protesters demanded the House of Representatives (DPR) to halt the passing of a number of controversial bills. They also urged the president to issue Government Regulation in Lieu of Law concerning the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

"Their demands are intended to improve our country," the former Jakarta governor said.
