USTDA approved grant funding of USD $2,495,000 to the Nusantara Capital Authority for technical assistance to develop detailed designs, technical specifications, procurement documentation, and a capacity building strategy to support the development of Nusantara’s priority smart city infrastructure.
Additionally, in April 2024, USTDA will host a reverse trade mission to bring to the United States a delegation of senior officials and decision-makers leading the planning, financing, and implementation of Nusantara. The delegation will travel to New York, Houston, Austin and Los Angeles to learn about U.S. smart city technologies and applications, develop business connections, and discuss financing and investment resources and opportunities.

Director Ebong announced the new initiatives at the USTDA Nusantara Business Forum in Jakarta on March 7, joined by Chairman Bambang Susantono from the Nusantara National Capital Authority (OIKN). The forum gathered 200 Indonesian and U.S. government officials and business leaders to explore collaboration on the new capital project. While in Indonesia, Director Ebong will tour the future site of Nusantara.
Nusantara city planners intend to incorporate smart city technology throughout Nusantara to optimize government resources, increase sustainability and improve quality of life for residents, and U.S. companies are at the forefront of innovative technologies that can help meet these aims. USTDA is deploying targeted programming to connect city planners with solutions that meet their smart city needs.
In March 2024, USTDA hosted a business forum in Jakarta for U.S. companies to hear from Indonesian officials about the current priorities, needs, and challenges related to Nusantara’s development. Participants learned about upcoming opportunities in Nusantara’s smart city applications, engaged with Indonesian officials driving the city’s development, and connected with private Indonesian companies interested in partnerships.

Advancing Efficient, Sustainable Procurement
The construction of Nusantara will require essential infrastructure in every sector, and sound public procurement decisions will be vital to the cost-effective implementation of a sustainable, enduring city. Since 2021, USTDA’s Global Procurement Initiative (GPI) has partnered with Indonesia to strengthen public procurement practices that will help lead to the acquisition of high-quality, long-lasting technologies with overall government savings.- In March 2024, hosted a GPI training workshop for over 60 Indonesian officials from 12 government agencies, related to project management best practices and the international procurement of good and services to help optimize high-quality infrastructure procurement in Nusantara. The training focused on life-cycle cost analysis and best value principles.
- In February 2023, USTDA brought a delegation of 15 Indonesian procurement officials to Washington, DC, New York City and San Francisco, to exchange information with U.S. counterparts at the federal, state, and local levels who manage innovative public procurement mechanisms and best practices. This GPI study tour also included training and explored innovative models for city management, such as a U.S. National Park Service-hosted tour of the National Mall, which is managed as a public-private partnership.
