Jakarta: As many as 22 countries will attend the 43rd ASEAN Summit which will be held in Jakarta next week. Unfortunately, ASEAN member countries will still 'lose' representatives from Myanmar at this summit.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi said 10 ASEAN member countries including the Prime Minister of Timor Leste had been confirmed to attend.
"Nine countries joined the East Asia Summit, two invited countries, namely the Chair of the IORA and the Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), a total of 22 countries and nine international organizations," said Retno, at a media gathering in Jakarta, Monday, 28 August 2023.
The series of summits will begin with a senior officials meeting (SOM), at the ministerial level and continue at the head of state level.
Retno said that there had been many bilateral requests with President Joko Widodo, but she did not specify which countries.
Of the several countries that have confirmed, China said their country's leaders would attend. However, it is not yet certain that President Xi Jinping will be present.
This is because China always sends Prime Ministers to attend ASEAN Summits. Meanwhile, from the United States (US), Vice President Kamala Harris will come, representing President Joe Biden who will be in India to attend the G20 Summit.
Meanwhile, said Retno, there will be cooperation signed by the ASEAN Secretariat, PIF and IORA.
ASEAN's theme in Indonesia's chairmanship is 'ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth'. In this theme, Indonesia wants to show that ASEAN is still relevant and will become the center of world economic growth.
