Jakarta: The Head of the Ministry of Health's Public Communication and Service Bureau, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, revealed the cases of dengue fever (DF) in Indonesia. Tens of thousands of cases have been reported from 213 Districts/Cities in Indonesia.
"If we look at the DF cases in week 12 of 2024, they reached 38,462 cases with 316 deaths," said Nadia when contacted on Friday, March 29, 2024.
These figures are significantly higher compared to 2023. In the 12th week of last year, there were only 17,434 DF cases, while in 2024, it doubled.
"Similarly, the number of deaths increased in the 12th week of last year to 118 cases. Meanwhile, this year, in the same period, there have been 316 cases," she said.
She urged people experiencing DF symptoms to seek healthcare facilities. Symptoms include continuous vomiting, abdominal pain, pale hands and feet, weakened pulse, lethargy, decreased urine output, and so on.
The increase in DF cases in Indonesia is due to weather factors affecting the mosquito life cycle, which has also increased. Contributing factors include shifts in climate change affecting diseases. One of the factors is DF due to phenomena such as El Niño, the shift from an extended dry season to a rainy season.
Changes in weather affect mosquitoes because their life cycle from egg to adult mosquitoes also accelerates. Consequently, there is an increase in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
