Jakarta: The House of Representatives (DPR) has decided to delay the passing of the Criminal Code Bill, the Minerals and Coal Bill, the Land Bill and the Bill on Corrections.

"Article 20 point 2 of the 1945 Constitution stipulates that bill must be discussed and approved by both DPR and the Government," DPR Speaker Bambang Soesatyo told a press conference here on Tuesday, September 24, 2019.

"Without agreement between the two institutions, any bill cannot be passed into law," the Golkar Party lawmaker added.

According to Bambang, DPR and the government will review controversial articles in the bills. In addition to that, lawmakers will also gather inputs from the public.

University students held a massive rally in front of the Parliament Complex in South Jakarta today. Similar protests also happened in many cities across Indonesia.

"The delay was not only based on the government's request. It was also based on the students' demands," Bambang said.
