Jakarta: National Development Planning Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro has explained that Indonesia's new capital city must fulfill a number of criteria.

"The most important criterion is disaster risks," the minister told a presss conference on Tuesday.

"Regions with the lowest disaster risks are Eastern Sumatra, Kalimantan and Southern Sulawesi," the minister noted.

National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Bambang Brodjonegoro presented three alternatives to move the capital city out of Jakarta at a Limited Cabinet Meeting at the Presidential Office in Jakarta on Monday.

First, several ministries and institutions could be centralized around the Presidential Palace and the National Monument. This option would make coordination more effective and efficient.

Second, the new capital city could be built within a radius of 50-70 km from Jakarta. It would be similar with Putrajaya in Malaysia.

Lastly, the center of government could be moved to other Island. This last option would reduce Java Island's burden.

On that occasion, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has chosen the third alternative, namely to move the capital out of Java.
