Military, Police Continuously Monitor Hotspots in Riau

Pekanbaru: Personnel are still trying to extinguish forest and land fires (karhutla) in Riau Province. Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Commander Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto ordered his members to monitor the forest and land fires throughout the day.

“This fire must continue to be observed because the fire behaves differently between night and day. Sometimes the fire goes out during the day, then at night it lights up again,” said Hadi in Pelalawan Regency, Riau on Sunday, September 15, 2019.

Hadi said that TNI members would monitor the hotspots using drones. The number of water pumps and hoses used to put out the fires will also be added.

This will hopefully help make it easier for officers to extinguish the hotspots. Hadi also asked his men to make a ditch around the burning land.

“we are also sending an excavator to enlarge the ditch” he said.

National Police Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian was surprised to see forest and land fires in Riau. He said no plantation land had been burned.

“Even though there are only a few and at the edge. This shows the practice of land clearing easily and cheaply utilizing the dry season,” said Tito.

Tito emphasized that 99 percent of land fires are man made. The police will crack down on people who started the fire.

Tito requested that the fire handling task force be more unified in extinguishing the hotspots. Tito wants the joint personnel to maintain solidarity in dealing with problems properly.

“We will give reward and punishment to the regional police and their staff,” concluded Tito.

TNI Commander, Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto together with National Police Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian and Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Doni Monardo reviewed the forest and land fires in Riau Province, Sunday, 15 September 2019. It was detected that there were 27 hotspots to the high category fire in the Riau Province.

Pekanbaru City is still shrouded in thin and thick smoke with visibility between one to two kilometers with temperatures ranging up to 37 degrees Celsius.
