Jakarta: The government has decided to end cooperation with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Indonesia. The independent conservation institution was considered not capable enough in carrying out its duties. The goals set with the government were not realized.
Director General of Conservation and Natural Resources and Ecosystems of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) Wiratno said WWF Indonesia failed to anticipate and handle fires at several points of land which were the responsibility of the organization as well as PT ABT as the concession holder.
The land in question is an ecosystem restoration concession that acts as a buffer zone for the Bukit Tigapuluh National Park in Jambi. The land area reaches 400 thousand hectares and is a habitat for endangered Sumatran tigers and elephants.
In addition, the government also found violations of the principles of cooperation and unilateral claims that did not match the facts on the ground.
"A series of social media campaigns and report publications do not match the facts carried out by the management of the WWF Indonesia Foundation," he said.
Related to the decision, WWF Indonesia’s spokesperson Kuntoro Mangkusubroto stated that the institution will continue to operate in Indonesia, continuing its work and contribution to the preservation of living natural resources and sustainable development in Indonesia.
"As an independent Indonesian legal entity that is part of a civil society group, the WWF Indonesia Foundation has the right to carry out its activities in Indonesia based on applicable laws and regulations," Kuntoro said.
