Jakarta: President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has dispatched humanitarian assistance for evacuees in Maluku and papua provinces.
Last week, thousands of people were forced to flee their homes after a strong earthquake rocked several regions in Maluku province. In the previous week, thousands of Wamena residents decided to leave the Jayawijaya's capital after riots occured in the city.
According to the Presidential Secretariat, as many as two thousand packages were given to the Maluku Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency. In the meantime, 1,860 packages were flown by the Air Force to Papua.
"We will deliver additional 3,620 packages this Thursday and Friday," the Presidential Secretariat's Press, Media and Information bureau head Erlin Suastini said here on Wednesday, October 2, 2019.
One package consists of five kilograms of rice, one kilogram of sugar, one liter of cooking oil, one box of tea, one box of biscuits and one bottle of drinking water.
The 6.5 magnitude eathquake shook Ambon and its nearby areas on Thursday morning. The epicenter of the earthquake was located 40 kilometers northwest of Ambon.
The earthquake did not trigger tsunami warnings. Nevertheless, the strong quake caused panic in Ambon.
