Jakarta: The death toll from floods in Jakarta and its satellite cities has risen to 16. Torrential rains have triggered floods in Greater Jakarta region.
"Based on temporary data gathered by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the death toll has risen to 16," BNPB Communication, Information and Data Division Head Agus Wibowo said in a written statement issued on Thursday, January 2, 2019.
According to the BNPB official, as many as 8 people were found dead in Jakarta, 3 in Depok City, 1 in Bekasi City, 1 in Bogor City, 1 in Bogor Regency, 1 in Tangerang City and 1 in South Tangerang City.
"BNPB is continuously updating the data. The death toll may rise," the BNPB spokesperson explained.
As many as 31,232 Jakarta residents were forced to flee their homes after floods hit several areas in the capital city. The evacuees currently stay in 269 evacuation centers in 38 affected districts.
According to the Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Data and Information Division head M Ridwan, the data will be continuously updated.
"The data was updated at 19.00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) on Wednesday, January 1, 2020," Ridwan said here on Thursday, January 2, 2019.
