New York: Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has submitted the Instrument of Ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) to the Secretariat General of the United Nations (UN). The submission of the TPNW was carried out at the Treaty Event in New York, United States on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.

"The submission of this Instrument confirms Indonesia's active role in maintaining international peace and security through disarmament," as quoted from the press release of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wednesday, September 25, 2024.

Previously, on November 21, 2023, the Plenary Meeting of the Indonesian House of Representatives had ratified the Draft Law (RUU) on the Ratification of the TPNW into Law Number 22 of 2023, which came into effect on December 20, 2023. With the submission of the Instrument of Ratification, Indonesia officially became a state party to the TPNW.

"In the future, Indonesia will continue to push for the universalization of the TPNW, with the aim of getting more countries to sign and ratify this agreement," the statement continued.

By adopting the TPNW, Indonesia means that it has helped form an international norm that opposes nuclear weapons from a humanitarian perspective, putting moral and political pressure on nuclear-weapon states to stop developing them.

"This step reflects Indonesia's moral commitment to humanity and peace, and provides an example for other countries to participate in building a safer world. Indonesia will continue to strive to push for the universalization of the TPNW with the hope that the more countries that join, the smaller the risk of using nuclear weapons, while strengthening efforts for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation at the global level," explained by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) was first adopted on July 7, 2017 and aims to regulate the complete prohibition of nuclear weapons. Currently, there are 70 countries that have become state parties and 93 countries that have signed the TPNW.
