Walhi Awaits Concrete Offers from Presidential Candidates

14 February 2019 17:20
Jakarta: The Indonesian Forum for Environment (Walhi) hopes that presidential candidates would come up with concrete offers to solve the country's environmental problems and address the impacts of climate change during the upcoming presidential election debate.

"They should have more concrete offers concerning environmental issues, for instance, the ecological disaster that is getting worse from year to year," Walhi campaign manager on climate justice Yuyun Harmono said here on Thursday.

According to him, human activities are among the major factors that induce ecological disaster. They damage the environment and trigger climate change.

The second presidential election debate will be held on February 17. It will feature five themes: energy, the environment, infrastructure, food, and natural resources.

The first debate was organized on January 17. It covered the issues of law, human rights, terrorism, and corruption.

In connection with the 2019 Presidential Election, the General Election Commissions (KPU) has prepared five rounds of presidential debates for the pairs of Joko Widodo-Ma'ruf Amin and Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno. The presidential debates are expected to help some 192 million eligible voters, who will participate in this democratic process, to become well-informed on the two pairs' capacity and capability.

Empowered with sufficient information about the candidates, they will be able to vote rationally. Whoever wins the upcoming presidential election, Indonesia will have a new pair of capable president and vice president.

Indonesia will organize simultaneous legislative and presidential elections on April 17. It will become the first simultaneous legislative and presidential elections in the country's history. (Antara)
