Yogyakarta: President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is scheduled to inaugurate an underpass at the Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) on Friday, January 31, 2010. It is one of President Jokowi's agenda during his visit to Yogyakarta province.

The total length of the underpass is around 1.4 kilometers. It is considered as one of the longest underpasses in the country.

Before inaugurating the project, the former Jakarta governor will hand over land certificates to local residents in the province. According to the presidential palace, the land certificate distribution ceremony will be held at Taman Buaday Building, Pengasih, Kulon Progo.

During the event, the former Solo mayor will be accompanied by State Secretary Minister Pratikno, Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Whisnutama and Presidential Secretariat Head Heru Budi Hartono. In addition, a number of palace staff will also be present.

The construction of the YIA Underpass began in November 2018 at a cost of Rp293 billion sourced from the 2018-2019 Sharia Bonds (SBSN/Sukuk). The construction was conducted by a contractor PT. Wijaya Karya-MCM KSO.

In addition to connecting Purwokerto with Yogyakarta through Java South Coast National Road, the YIA Underpass is expected to ease the traffic in Kulon Progo and its surrounding areas as well as to boost economic growth in Kulon Progo Regency. The operation of the YIA Underpass also supports the Java South Coast National Road as an alternative to the North Coast National Road.
