Ministries to Probe Foreign Companies Related to Land, Forest Fires

Kautsar Widya Prabowo • 03 October 2019 12:46
Jakarta: Forestry and Environment Ministry is moving fast to punish perpetrators behind land and forest fires.

Forestry and Environment Minister Siti Nurbaya and Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi have talked about 20 foreign companies that allegedly caused land and forest fires.

“There has been conversation with the foreign minister relating to that. However, the conversation is still informal. There has not yet been formal announcement from the Environment Ministry to the Foreign Ministry,” Minister Siti said here on Wednesday, October 2, 2019.

“The Environment Ministry has recently notified the Foreign Ministry of the involvement of the
foreign companies in the land and forest fires,” she said.

Previously, the Directorate General of Law Enforcement of the Forestry and Environment Ministry, Rasio Ridho Sani, said that a total of 64 hectares of land, which was burnt, has been sealed. The area is thought to be owned by 20 foreign companies from Singapore and Malaysia.

The area is spread across South Sumatera, Riau, Jambi, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan and East Kalimantan. It consists of 47 palm oil fields, 13 natural forests, three industrial-grown forests and one area under restoration. The amount of the burn area totals 14,343 hectares.
