Jakarta: President Joko Widodo (Widodo) wished a Merry Christmas to all Christians in Indonesia through his official instagram page on Friday.

According to President Jokowi, the ongoing covid-19 pandemic has affected many lives and livelihoods in the country.

"This year's Christmas is unlike previous years when joy and happiness enveloped the country in the end of the year. The pandemic has changed many things and taught many lessons," said the President.

"May peace, safety, and God's blessings always accompany us," he stated.

Meanwhile, in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Christians in the country have been urged to celebrate Christmas in a simple manner.

"As Jesus Christ was born to be a teacher of goodness and simplicity as well as a figure who pays attention to the weak, we urge all elements of society to celebrate this year's Christmas in a simple manner," Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas said in a video message on Christmas's Eve.

"We appeal to all Christians and also all religious communities to actively participate in creating peace and harmony," the minister added.
