Jakarta: On March 6, U.S. and Indonesian officials launched the joint celebration of 75 years of U.S.-Indonesia diplomatic relations, unveiling anniversary-year branding and a theme of “Diversity, Democracy, Prosperity," in a public event at the U.S. Embassy’s @america center in Jakarta.

Following the elevation of the U.S.-Indonesia bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in November, 2023, and the Plan of Action 2024-2028, the U.S.-Indonesia 75th Celebration (#IndonesiaUSA75) will feature special public events, exchanges, and contests throughout 2024, emphasizing shared values and goals, and highlighting cooperation that spans security, economy, education, climate, and people-to-people efforts.

“As we celebrate our deep friendship, close partnership, and 75 years of diplomatic relations, we are committed to working together to tackle the emerging challenges of the twenty-first century and deliver a better future for our citizens,” said U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Michael F. Kleine.

Joining CDA Kleine opening the event was the Director General for American and European Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, Ambassador Umar Hadi. “By commemorating the values of Diversity, Democracy, and Prosperity through the 75th anniversary, the United States and Indonesia reaffirm their enduring partnership and dedication to promoting a world where diversity is celebrated, democracy is upheld, and prosperity is shared by all,” said Ambassador Umar Hadi.

U.S. State Department Deputy Assistant Secretary Melissa A. Brown, who oversees the Office of Maritime Southeast Asia Affairs and Office of Mainland Southeast Asia Affairs in Washington, DC, joined the launch event during her Jakarta visit, participating in a panel discussion with Dr. Yayan GH Mulyana, KEMLU Director General for Foreign Policy Strategy Agency.

Brown noted that “We continue to elevate our partnership rooted in shared values, supporting widespread stability and prosperity.  There is so much we can accomplish together as two diverse democracies, creating a prosperous future for coming generations of Indonesians and Americans.”

Dr. Yayan Mulyana explained, “The US and Indonesia now have both strategic and comprehensive partnership. It reflects the depth of the commitment and depth of investment of mutual respect and mutual cooperation not only for both nations but also go beyond those both nations to the regions including Southeast Asia and Indo-Pacific."

Theme: “Diversity, Democracy, Prosperity”

U.S-Indonesia 75th anniversary activities in 2024 elevate a partnership rooted in shared values, including diversity and democracy, in support of widespread stability and prosperity:
  • The United States and Indonesia embrace diversity as a source of strength, as reflected in our respective national mottos: “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” and “E Pluribus Unum” – from many, one.
  • As the world’s second and third largest democracies, common interests include inclusivity, safeguarding fundamental human rights, upholding press freedom, and ensuring religious freedom.
  • A close partnership on regional and global issues, from promoting respect for international boundaries to expanding trade and investment, increases prosperity for Americans and Indonesians, as well as the broader Indo-Pacific region.

2024 75th Anniversary Activities

Throughout the anniversary year, the United States and Indonesia will showcase a broad partnership through a range of public initiatives, including:

Photo Contest: Through September, U.S. and Indonesia diplomatic missions are collecting photos of Indonesians and Americans highlighting people-to-people exchange or the broader relationship.  Photos will be collected through September online via Instagram using hashtag #IndonesiaUSA75, with winning photos included in a virtual exhibit and commemorative book.
