Jakarta: President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has prioritized the development of food estates in Central Kalimantan and North Sumatra provinces.
According to the president, the policy aims to anticipate the threats of potential food crisis and future climate change.
"We have prepared locations in Central Kalimantan and North Sumatra," said Jokowi in a virtual cabinet meeting here on Wednesday.
"This is what we want to prioritize first," the former Jakarta governor stated.
The food estates will be established in Kapuas and Pulang Pisau regencies in Central Kalimantan as well as Humbang Hasundutan Regency in North Sumatra. The government also plans to build food estates in Papua, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and South Sumatra. The plan will only be discussed after the completion of the projects in Central Kalimantan and North Sumatra.
Previously, Jokowi assigned three ministers to supervise the projects. They are Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir, and Minister of Defense Prabowo Subianto. He also instructed Minister of Land and Spatial Planning Sofyan Djalil to support the land acquistion process.
