Malang: A magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook Malang Regency in East Java Province at 11.36 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) on Tuesday, January 17, 2023.
According to information published on the official website of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake did not trigger tsunami warnings.
However, the BMKG advises the public to remain vigilant against potential aftershocks.
With a depth of 17 kilometers (km), the epicenter was located 125 km southwest of Malang Regency.
Located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia is prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunami waves.
