Mangrove Rehabilitation Program Can Provide Source of Livelihood: BRGM

Jakarta: Mangrove rehabilitation, through the National Economic Recovery (PEN) Program, can preserve the ecosystem while concurrently providing a source of livelihood for citizens, according to the Peatland and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM).

In a statement here on Wednesday, BRGM Secretary Ayu Dewi Utari opined that mangrove ecosystem rehabilitation proffered benefits that would be felt more in a year or two.

However, Utari believes that citizens would be able to avail far greater benefits within five years since a tourism area can be established in the mangrove ecosystem.

In related news, Village Chief of Toray, Merauke, Papua, Barsalinan Deda was optimistic that his region would receive training and support for conducting mangrove rehabilitation.

Since the village lies within a protected forest region, Deda highlighted the residents’ aspirations of growing mangroves around the village to not only add to the aesthetic appeal of the region but also to transform it into a tourist village.

Moreover, BRGM Head Hartono believes that his group will continue to communicate and synergize with all stakeholders for peatland restoration and mangrove rehabilitation activities.

According to Hartono, peatland restoration and mangrove rehabilitation were part of the efforts to protect the nation since the destruction of peatland and mangrove areas can have an effect on climate change, nationally and globally.

"Peatland and mangrove restoration holds increasing relevance for our country's objective. The BRGM is also striving to implement PEN by involving the public," Hartono noted during an online seminar titled "Protecting Peatland and Mangrove Together for Resilient and Growing Indonesia."

Chairman of the Indonesia Mangrove Society Sahat M. Panggabean highlighted the role of mangroves in mitigating the impacts of tsunami, as they help in buffering against huge waves.
