Batam: The Indonesian Coast Guard (Bakamla) will deploy 17 patrol ships to secure three border regions in the Malacca Straits, Singapore Straits, and North Kalimantan during the 2022 national joint patrol.

The joint patrol will involve 200 personnel of the Indonesian Navy, Marine and Air Police (Polairud), the Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance (PSDKP) of the Marine and Fisheries Affairs Ministry, Directorate General of Customs and Indonesian Sea and Coast Guard (KPLP).

"For the first joint patrol, we deploy 17 ships comprising state-owned ships (KN) and war ships (KRI). Seven of the ships would be provided by Bakamla, while other institutions will provide two ships each," Bakamla Chief Vice Admiral Aan Kurnia stated at the launch of the joint operation at Bintang 99 Port, Batu Ampar, here, on Tuesday.

The joint patrol is conducted on the basis of the president's order as stipulated in Government Regulation No. 13 of 2022 and Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Regulation No. 74 of 2022 on the National Patrol Plan.

"The joint patrol will be conducted for two months and will end in mid-October. Initially, it will be focused in the Malacca Straits, Singapore Straits, and North Kalimantan," he stated.

The joint patrol is targeted to suppress illegal activities in the waters, such as illegal fishing and human trafficking, Kurnia remarked.

"There are various crimes committed in these waters. In the Singapore Straits, for instance, there were cases of illegal fishing, while in Malacca Straits, we have illegal migrant workers (trafficking)," he stated.

The joint patrolling is expected to bolster coordination among institutions to reduce criminal acts in the waters, Kurnia remarked.
