Indonesian Crew Members Drowned in South Korea, Search Effort Extended

Seoul: The Protection of Citizens Team of the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul continues to coordinate with the Korean Coast Guard (KCG) regarding the search for four Indonesian crew members who sank in the waters of Ginseng Country.
 
"The Protection of Citizens Team of the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul continues to coordinate closely with KCG for the process of searching for four Indonesian crew members who disappeared due to the sinking of the fishing vessel 2 Haesinho," said the Director of Protection for Indonesian Citizens and Indonesian Legal Entities (PWNI and BHI) of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Judha Nugraha in a statement, Tuesday, March 12 2024.
 
Until now, said Judha, KCG is still continuing to search for five crew members consisting of four Indonesian citizens and a missing South Korean citizen.

"KCG has deployed 19 KCG ships, one Korean Navy ship, 27 private ships located around the location, 13 helicopters and 20 dives," he continued.
 
According to procedures, SAR operations were carried out 3x24 hours. Judha added, in accordance with the coordination of the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul, the KCG decided to extend the SAR operation.
 
The Indonesian Embassy, he continued, was also coordinating with the ship owner to prepare for the repatriation of the bodies of 3 Indonesian crew members who had been found previously. They also discussed the rights of crew members.
 
According to Judha, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to collaborate with related agencies, and provides updates on the process of searching for and handling bodies to families in Indonesia.
 
Previously, South Korean authorities had found four of a total of nine crew ships that were lost in a fishing incident that sank in the South Yeosu Sea until Sunday, March 10 2024.
 
Of the four people, three were Indonesian crew members (WNI crew members) and one was a South Korean crew member. All four died.
 
Quoting from Yonhap News Agency, the 20-ton fishing boat capsized in waters about 68 kilometers south of an island in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province, on Saturday at 06:29 local time.
 
South Korean officials said 12 Coast Guard patrol boats, four from the Navy and six helicopters were carrying out search operations at the scene.
 
The party admitted that they did not find any signs that the ship had hit another ship or hit a rock. The cause of the capsizing of the ship is not yet known.
