Jokowi Orders BNPB Head, Minister to Visit Quake-Affected Areas in West Sulawesi

Jakarta: President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has instructed National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Head Doni Monardo and Social Affairs Minister Tri Rismaharini to visit West Sulawesi and inspect the impact of today's earthquake in the province.
 
At around 01.28 Western Indonesia Time (WIB), a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Majene Regency and its nearby regions in West Sulawesi. With a depth of 10 kilometers, the epicenter of the earthquake was located six kilometers northeast of Majene Regency.
 
"This morning, January 15, 2021, Indonesian President Joko Widodo ordered BNPB Head Doni Monardo and Social Affairs Minister Tri Rismaharini to immediately inspect the affected areas," said BNPB spokesperson Raditya Jati in a press release on Monday.

In Majene Regency, the strong earthquake killed at least eight people and injured more than 600 residents. Around 15,000 people were also forced to flee their homes.
 
In Mamuju Regency, the earthquake heavily damaged West Sulawesi Governor's Office and other buildings. It also caused landslides along the Mamuju-Majene access road.
 
Accoring to the BNPB, authorities have started distribution of relief assistance to the two regencies. The evacuees are in need of food, clothes, medicines, and tents.
