Jakarta: Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has affirmed that the tariff scheme of Jakarta mass rapid transit (MRT) will be determined before March 24.

"We are only waiting for the Jakarta Legislative Council's approval," Anies told the press on Wednesday.

The first phase of Jakarta MRT will be inaugurated by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on March 24. The inauguration ceremony will be held at Bundaran Hotel Indonesian in Central Jakarta

The first phase of Jakarta MRT will connect Bundaran Hotel Indonesia and Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta. The route will have 7 elevated stations and 6 underground stations.

The second phase of Jakarta MRT will connect Bundaran Hotel Indonesia and Kampung Bandan in North Jakarta. The route is expected to be operational by 2024.

President Jokowi earlier explained that the tariff of Jakarta MRTT will be decided by the Jakarta provincial administration and the Jakarta Legislative Council. The President also expressed hope that the tariff will be decided before the inauguration of the Jakarta MRT.

“After the 230-km line of the Jabodetabek (MRT) is completed, the Jakarta governor will apply Electronic Road Pricing to force car owners to use this mode of transportation,” Cabinet Secretary's website quoted President Jokowi as saying.

President Jokowi has instructed authroities to integrate public transportation services in Greater Jakarta. He believes that the policy could reduce traffic issues in the region.

The region is the most populous urban area in Indonesia. It is also the center of government and economy of the country.

"Traffic congestion in Jakarta, Bekasi and Tangerang has caused massive economic losses. This issue has been ignored for decades," President Jokowi told a limited cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

"Ministries, agencies, regions should remove sectoral ego. We should prioritize our national interest," President Jokowi noted.
