New York: Indonesia is becoming a country that is increasingly being taken into account on the global stage. Ahead of this year's UN General Assembly Session, Indonesia has received around 80 invitations to bilateral meetings.

"Later we will see whether the time allows for everything," said the Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi in a written statement to media crew, Tuesday, 19 September 2023.

"Our estimate is that so far what can be done is a maximum of around 40-50 meetings," he continued.

At the Sustainable Development Goals Summit or SDGs Summit in New York, United States (US) last Monday, Foreign Minister Retno held 11 meetings, both in full bilateral and pull-aside schemes.

A full bilateral meeting was held by Foreign Minister Retno with the Foreign Minister of Palau, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia, UN humanitarian affairs official Martin Griffith, United States Congressman Eric Swalweel, and the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Saint Lucia.

Meanwhile, a meeting with the pull-aside scheme was held by Foreign Minister Retno with Ministers from the Maldives, Palestine, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, the President of Timor Leste, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Congo, and also the Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan.

Regarding the SDGs Summit meeting itself, Foreign Minister Retno said that Indonesia's Sustainable Development indicators had reached 63 percent, based on BAPPENAS data.

However, this figure still does not encourage progress in achieving the SDGs at the regional level considering that the development gap is still quite high. For global SDGs indicators that are on track, the figure is even smaller, around 12 percent.

Still at the meeting, Foreign Minister Retno also delivered a Joint Statement on behalf of ASEAN. The Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized ASEAN's strong commitment to achieving the SDGs targets.

"ASEAN's commitment and efforts to achieve the SDGs are aligned with ASEAN Vision 2025 and ASEAN Vision 2045," said the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
