South Sumatra Extends Wildfire Emergency Status

Jakarta: South Sumatera Governor, Herman Deru, has extended the emergency status concerning the ongoing land and forest fire for 20 days.
The personnel of the task force in charge of land and forest fires will be redeployed to the affected areas to observe the latest condition.
“The status will automatically end on December 1 of 2019,” Herman said here on Friday, November 8, 2019.

Herman said that the extension was prompted by unpredictable weather condition in the province.
“After our personnel were withdrawn, all of a sudden hotspots reappeared,” he said
The Provincial Government of South Sumatera have also allocated additional funds in response to the natural disaster emergency status in the regencies of Ogan Komering Ilir, Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir and Ogan Ilir.
“We can no longer rely on funds from the central government. The amount of funds will be determined by the National Body for Disaster Management (BNPB). We have warned the personnel of the task force to not leave the location when the fires have not yet successfully extinguished," he said. (Translator: Muhammad Gestinev)
