Jakarta: A magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit Southeast Maluku Regency in Maluku Province on Wednesday at around 11.28 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake did not trigger tsunami warnings.

"The epicenter was located 112 km southwest of Southeast Maluku Regency," said National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Raditya Jati in a press release on Wednesday afternoon.

"No reports of casualties and damages yet," the BNPB official added.

During the past two weeks, Indonesia is struggling with a string of disasters, such as landslide in West Java, earthquake in West Sulawesi, and floods in South Kalimantan.

"Local residents were ordered to stay vigilant," Raditya stated.
