New York: High Level Week The UN General Assembly begins on Tuesday, September 19 2023. In this annual meeting, world leaders gather to discuss various global issues.

In his opening speech, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres announced world unity to face various global challenges.

"Currently, we are entering a multipolar era which presents new opportunities to realize justice in international relations," said Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, echoing Guterres' message.

“However, multipolarity cannot by itself guarantee peace. "Therefore, strong and effective multilateral institutions are needed to realize peace," she continued.

Still echoing Guterres' message and concerns, Foreign Minister Retno said that current global governance does not yet support the formation of strong and effective multilateral institutions. The UN Security Council and the Bretton Wood System are considered outdated and need to be reformed.

Polarized World

Guterres also said that the world is polarized between North and South, East and West. Therefore, said Foreign Minister Retno, multilateralism must be revitalized so that it can reflect the current situation and be able to face global challenges.

Apart from that, Guterres also expressed the need for more compromise so that the world community can realize peace and shared prosperity.

World peace is considered important in efforts to achieve Sustainable Development or SDGs. Without peace, the SDGs will be increasingly difficult to achieve.

"And the Secretary General also reiterated the need for USD 500 billion in stimulus funds to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs," said Foreign Minister Retno.

"Regarding climate change, the Secretary General urges the realization of a commitment of USD 100 billion to help developing countries," she added.
