Jakarta: Former Head of the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) Strategic Intelligence Agency, Soleman B Ponto, said the stabbing of the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menkopolhukam) Wiranto was carried out spontaneously like a lonewolf attack.
"When the chance presented itself, he used it. This fits the lonewolf category, a terrorist who works alone. When they get the chance, they go for it," Soleman said in Prime Time Program, Metro TV, Jakarta, Thursday, October 10, 2019.
Soleman explained that Wiranto had been targeted by the perpetrators since he would be considered a common enemy to these perpetrators' beliefs. Also, the pattern of using sharp weapons to attack is dangerous since it targets one person, unlike using bombs, the destructive pool would be wider.
"When the opportunity arose, they patiently waited. Then they wait to strike. Now they can choose their targets," he said.
"The head of BIN said that there had been intelligence chatter that detected (terrorist) movement from Bekasi to Pandeglang. After someone had seen the report, the first ring of guards had to be careful," he said.
Soleman said that this information should have been conveyed during the coordination meeting knowing that Wiranto was going to visit the area.
"The frontline bodyguards must be more careful, what happened during the incident was within a 1-meter radius there were 2 unknown individuals, the protective bubble around the minister should have been at least 3 meters and the bodyguards should know everyone in it," he said.
