Prabowo Balances Indonesia’s Free and Active Foreign Policy with Visits to China and the US

Jakarta: President Prabowo Subianto selected China as the first country for his official visit, with plans to follow up with a visit to the United States.

Yon Machmudi, an international relations expert from the University of Indonesia, interprets this as Prabowo's effort to maintain Indonesia's foreign policy balance under his leadership.

"I believe this reflects the balance Prabowo is striving for, even if the initial visit is to China," Yon shared with Medcom.id on Thursday, October 31, 2024.

He noted that China was prioritized due to geographic proximity, but the US remains an essential stop.

"Prabowo continues to value the US as a traditional partner, which aligns with Indonesia's efforts to strengthen its global standing," Yon added.

Previously, Prabowo had sent Foreign Minister Sugiono, one of his close allies, to represent Indonesia at the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, signaling Indonesia’s growing interest in BRICS.

While some speculate that Indonesia may shift closer to the Eastern bloc, led by Russia and China, Yon clarified that Indonesia aims to play a more active global role to bolster its leadership.

"This approach also aligns with Indonesia’s constitutional commitment to promoting and maintaining peace," he concluded.
