Semarang: The Central Java provincial administration has distributed eight thousand masks to five villages around Mount Merapi volcano.
The volcano, which stands on the border of Yogyakarta and Central Java, erupted at 05.22 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) on Tuesday, March 3, 2020. It spewed a column of hot clouds up to 6,000 meters above its summit.
"The ash is quite thick in Boyolali. We have sent masks to the most affected villages. Eight thousand masks," Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo said here on Tuesday, March 3, 2020.
According to the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) politician, the five villages are located in Boyolali regency. Besides Boyolali, Magelang and Klaten were also affected by the eruption.
To anticipate the impact of the eruption, Central Java officials will closely monitor the situation in the affected areas. In addition, they will coordinate with local hospitals and medical centers.
Authorities urged locals to stay calm and resume their daily activities. They also instructed locals to avoid conducting activities within a three-kilometer radius of the peak of the volcano.
