Jakarta: President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Monday expressed condolences and sympathy to the victims of landslides and flash floods in East Nusa Tenggara Province.
"I also can understand the sadness of our brothers and sisters," said the Indonesian President in a virtual press conference on Monday morning.
President Jokowi has instruced National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Head Doni Monardo and National Search And Rescue Agency (Basarnas) Head Henri Alfiandi to immediately support the affected regions in the province.
"Disaster mitigation efforts must be conducted quickly and professionally," the President stated.
According to BNPB, at least 55 people died due to flash floods in Lembata and East Flores regencies in East Nusa Tenggara Province.
To tackle the impact of the potential extreme weather, BNPB and other related government regencies urged East Nusa Tenggara residents to remain vigilant.
Based on a report issued by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), most areas in Indonesia have the potential to experience extreme weather from April 3 until April 9.
In East Nusa Tenggara Province, several regions have the potential to experience heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds this week.
