medcom.id, Boyolali: A climber from Jogjakarta slipped and fell into the Merapi Crater in Boyolali, Central Java, on Saturday (5/16/2015). Gathered information stated the 21-year old climber, Ari Yunanto, slipped and fell while taking photos near the crater.

As many as 150 SAR personnel were deployed to search for Ari. The Head of Data Information and Public Affairs Center of the Indonesian Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the search is currently still ongoing.

"The search continues, as it was conducted by the joint rescue team. Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Boyolali Regency and Mt. Merapi National Park Board have coordinated a joint team of 150 SAR personnel from TRC BPBD Boyolali, SAR Boyolali, SAR Klaten, SAR DIY, Mapala, Mt. Merapi National Park, volunteers and others," he stated on Sunday (5/17/2015).

Sutopo said three Search Rescue Unit (SRU) have been on the crater's lip since Sunday morning. "Victim is at the depth of 300 meters from the crater's lip, while the SRU team is still at the depth of 50 meters from the lip due to heavy terrain condition," he elaborated.

According to Sutopo, the team standing by on Merapi's crater will spend the night to continue evacuation in the morning. "Due to heavy wind at the top of Merapi crater, then the SAR team is staying at a location 200 meters from the peak," Sutopo said.

A recommendation from the Geological Agency said evacuation and gear establishment in the designated path should have been conducted before noon, as the sun affects toxic gas. The crater's temperature is estimated at around 160 to 420 degrees in Celcius. (Eps)
