'Waiting in the White House Lobby' Filled with Speculations: Observer

Fajar Nugraha • 09 November 2015 14:38
medcom.id, Jakarta: When studying the words of Michael Buehler related to his article titled 'Waiting in the White House Lobby,' based on the document of Services Agreement between Pareira International Pte Ltd and R & R Partners, then there are many mismatching information if combined with the science of mix and match.

It was conveyed by Hikmahanto Juwana, the Professor of International Law of the University of Indonesia, in a release accepted by the Metrotvnews.com, Monday (11/9/2015). This comment was related to the accusations of the consultancy services in lobbying the visit of President Joko Widodo to the United States in October 25-27, 2015.

The first misinformation is that in the documents, there were no words referring to the Indonesian government.
Secondly, the document did not mention the relationship between the Pareira International Pte Ltd with the Indonesian government. Michael concluded that the document was as if requested by the Indonesian government. Nonetheless, Pareira International Pte Ltd could be hired by Indonesian businessmen.

Thirdly, the reference related to the coverage of the lobbyist - mentioned in the agreement as a consultant - did not refer to the meeting of Indonesian President with US President.

Within the coverage of the agreement, there are three things, which are arranging the meeting between the officials, both in legislative or the government. Secondly, delivering the issues during the joint sessions of the government and legislative. Third, identifying and working with influential figures in the US. The coverage of the occupation was as if related with President Jokowi's visit to the US.

"The possibility is that Michael arranged his articles between the Services Agreement with information gathered from various parties in Indonesia. Based on this, the argument to be delivered is that President Jokowi did not have control over the government," said Hikmahanto.

However, what was conveyed by Michael has many speculations as it is against the norms of diplomation between the states.

For the head of states and government visit, 'broker' is not used to arrange the meeting. Everything is arranged through the diplomatic and government channels.

"The story on the disharmony between the Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law and Security and the Foreign Minister was not based by scientific analysis, but the political gossips obtained by Michael Buehler from the media and his friends in Indonesia," mentioned Hikmahanto.

It is premature of Michael relates Pareira, a Singaporean citizen with the connection of Indonesian officials, that he was hired by the Indonesian government, as based on the Services Agreement, there was no reference of 'Indonesian Government'.

Therefore, Indonesian government through the Indonesian embassy in Britain may request the clarification from Michael. The clarification may be requested from the university which Michael is working. It has to be conducted since it may affect the credibility of the university, despite Michael's academic freedom.

The Indonesian Foreign Minister had denied the accusation of the consultant for Jokowi's visit to the US. FM Retno stated the visit was based on President Barack Obama's invitation during 2014 APEC in Beijing. The entire preparation was conducted by the Foreign Ministry and related ministries, as led directly by FM Retno.
