medcom.id, Yogyakarta: An eclipse inspires many myths in Indonesia. In Yogyakarta, the natural phenomenon is related to the myth of sun eater Buto.
Buto is a Javanese for giant. Javanese people in the past believed solar eclipse happens because a giant devours the sun.
Sumitro, an elder in Baleharjo village, Wonosari, Yogyakarta said in the past people beat their rice pounder when the solar eclipse occurred as they believed the giant will spew the sun if they disturb it with loud noise.
According to Soemitro, the tradition is also held for lunar eclipse. In fact, Javanese people are more worried with lunar eclipse because it is darker than solar eclipse.
Only few people are still holding the tradition due to modernization. "It seems the myth is starting to disappear," he mentioned to Metrotvnews.com not long ago.
