medcom.id, Jakarta: Attorney General Muhammad Prasetyo confirmed the government is going to hold death penalty execution this year. However, Prasetyo did not mentioned the death row convicts that will be executed.
He mentioned several convicts are still undergoing legal process. The government wants to ensure all convicts receive their rights before the execution.
"We will do it (the execution) this year," said Prasetyo, Jakarta, Monday (4/18/2016).
He explained the convicts have rights to file cassation to the Supreme Court. They could also ask for clemency to the president. "Some convicts even file a suit to the State Administrative Court which is unusual," he continued.
The Democrat Party politician underlined execution is not easy decision. However, it is needed as deterrence for other criminals. "It is difficult but we must do it," he added.
Prasetyo previously mentioned that the government prioritizes drug convicts in its execution policy. National Narcotics Agency Chief Budi Waseso claimed death row drug convicts should be executed as soon as possible so they cannot develop network inside prison.
The latest batch of execution held by the Indonesian government in April 2015.
