medcom.id, Jakarta: The application of death penalty in Indonesia is against the constitution, said member of National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) Rochiatul Aswidah.
She argued that the right to life cannot be violated for any reasons. Sh added that United Nations (UN) Human Rights Commission has issued resolution urging countries to erase capital punishment. "Indonesia must erase capital punishment entirely," she mentioned during public discussion, Jakarta, Tuesday (5/17/2016).
Archbishop of Jakarta Ignatius Suharyo also rejected death penalty. "Chatolic Church has rejected capital punishment without exceptions," he stated.
Ignatius argued Indonesian legal system is still far from perfect. Therefore, death penalty is very risky punishment.
The government is preparing the third batch of executions. However, Attorney General Muhammad Prasetyo has not decided the exact date.
Central Java Police revealed 15 drug convicts will be executed this year. 10 of them are foreigners comprise four Chinese nationals, a Pakistani, two Nigerians, two Senegalese and a Zimbabwean.
