medcom.id, Jakarta: Vice President Jusuf Kalla hinted that the government is to import rice from Vietnam. Import is conducted as a precaution against the El Niño effect.
"This is our precaution in facing El Niño," mentioned JK at the Vice Presidential Office, Jalan Medan Merdeka Utara, Central Jakarta, Monday (10/12/2015).
JK admitted that the discussion on rice import has been there for quite some time. Moreover, the talks about rice import has been discussed by President Joko Widodo along with the ministers of the Work Cabinet in a meeting.
The decision was taken due to the prolonged draught effect and El Niño. The rice will be used as a reserve, avoiding the people from having difficulties in searching for rice by the end of the year.
"It is to maintain the precaution so the people would not be troubled in November-December. Precautions," affirmed JK.
The Coordinating Minister of Economy Darmin Nasution is still silent on the opening of rice import flow from Vietnam. On the other side, based on the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Darmin said the level of draught due to El Niño is relatively high.
However, despite the high draught level, BMKG also predicted rain in November and December, so that January maybe the start of the rice planting activities.
