North Jakarta District Court Starts Ahok's Blasphemy Trial

medcom.id, Jakarta: The North Jakarta District Court has started the first hearing of the blasphemy trial of Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama.

Judge Dwiarso Budi Santiarto led the trial. He allowed live broadcast for the trial. However, he banned live broadcast for the presentation of evidence.

The Jakarta governor denied that he committed blasphemy. He said he did not insult the Koran.

"I was born from a non-Muslim family, but I was adopted by a Muslim family," he said.

"I am sad with the allegation," he stated.

Several Muslim organizations reported the politician last October after he cited Surah Al Maidah verse 51.

The incumbent will run in the Jakarta gubernatorial election next February. He will compete against Anies Baswedan and Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono.
