medcom.id, Jakarta: Two defendants of drug couriers, Agus Arifin, 37, and Sulaiman, 35, both from Aceh, are sentenced to death by the District Court of Ujung Tanjung, Rohil Regency, Riau, Monday (10/12/2015). Both were arrested when carrying Crystal Methamphetamine from Malaysia, with a net weight of 30 kilograms and the value of Rp60 billion.
The Head of the Judges Rudi Harry and two member judges, Hesti Indria and Zia Uljannah Idris, sentenced both defendants higher than the prosecution of the district attorneys (JPU). In their prosecution, JPU urged the judges to impose life sentence for the two defendants.
Head judge Rudi Harry affirmed that the two defendants were legally and convincingly proven guilty. Both violated Article 114 jo Article 112 paragraph 2, Law No. 35 Year 2009 on narcotics.
Based on the judge's decision, both defendants looked helpless as they put their heads down. Meanwhile, dozens of fully armed Rohil Precinct personnel were standing by inside and outside the courtroom.
Meanwhile, the defendants' legal counsel, Hartono explained that his party will still conduct legal attempts. Hartono thinks that the death penalty imposed by the judges were not just.
"Meanwhile from JPU itself, both defendants were only prosecuted for life. We will take legal attempts of filing a lawsuit to the High Court on that decision," Hartono stated.
Previously, both couriers were caught by the operational team of Rohil District, Riau, in a routine raid operation in Sumatra Highway. The police was suspicious of a Toyota Avanza minibus, by the number of BK 1530 OK, who tried to breach through the roadblock.
Despite passing through the lines of personnel, the minibus were chased after and stopped. When checked, officials found three large suitcases filled with Crystal Methamphetamine packaged in plastic wraps.
In the arrest, three people in the car got away, but two of them - the ones getting death sentence - were arrested after receiving shots fired by the police.
Meanwhile, one of them managed to escape. The one escapee was known to be M, who was a drug dealer. Currently, 'M' is still listed in the police's wanted list (DPO).
