medcom.id, Jakarta: Nahdlatul Ulama Chairman Said Aqil siradj said religious discourses from the Middle East cannot be applied in Indonesia. He argued religious discourses in the Middle East is separated from nationalism values.
"In the Middle East, there are no nationalist ulemas, and there are no nationalists who are seen as ulemas," Said mentioned at his Office, Jakarta, Monday (2/22/2016).
He mentioned that in the Middle East, nationalism and religion goes in opposite directions. It is different with Indonesia where an ulema may show himself as a true nationalist.
Said explained Indonesia is a nation that combines ideas of religion with nationalism. NU wishes that Indonesia remains to be peaceful and tolerant nation, by upholding its diversities.
Although the majority of Indonesian citizens are Muslims, Said disagree if the nation becomes an Islamic nation.
"The model of religious ideas in the Middle East cannot be brought to Indonesia, we must oppose it," he concluded.
