medcom.id, Jakarta: Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fishery Susi Pudjiastuti said all efforts conducted by the government in eradicating illegal fishing have provided results to Indonesia's fishery sector.

The GDP growth in fishery rose in the first quarter of 2015. It is recorded that the GDP of fishery in the first quarter of 2015 topped at 8.64 percent. Compared to the previous periods in 2013 and 2014, the increase is considered pleasing, whereas it was recorded at 7.46 and 6.77 percent respectively.

"Fishery sector growth have increased, as so far illegal fishing had no contribution to our numbers. The one providing incredible deed is the traditional fishermen income," Susi stated in a press conference in her office, Central Jakarta, Monday (5/18/2015).

In the same occasion, the Head of Indonesian Central Statistic Agency (BPS) Suryamin conveyed the fishery sector has developed higher on year-on-year basis, compare to other categories such as agriculture, livestock, hunting sector, as well as the farming services and forestry and logging, which grows respectively at 2.94 and 1.24 percent.

Year-on-year, the growth has been supported by increase in fishery cultivation products (including seaweed) and the effect of shrimp farming revitalization across West Java and Banten. There are also the utilization of shrimp cultivation areas with super intensive method in Sulawesi.

"But on Quarter-to-Quarter basis, the fishery sector growth has declined to 2.81 percent due to bad weather, causing fishermen to stay on shore," Suryamin said.

He added that the contribution of the fishery sector have only reached 2.46 percent out of the national GDP on the first quarter of 2015, which was recorded at only 4.71 percent. "This can only mean that there are still few on the fishery sector that we have managed," he concluded. (Eps)
