Ahok Prepared to Fight Ministry of Maritime in Reclamating 17 Islands

medcom.id, Jakarta: Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama is determined to run the reclamation projects of 17 islands in Jakarta Gulf. The accusation of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fishery (KKP) saying that Jakarta Provincial Government is violating regulation is considered as a misunderstanding.

KKP had asked Ahok to comply with the Minister of Maritime and Fishery Regulation No. 17 Year 2013 on Reclamation. Reclamation of man-made island has to obtain direct permission from the Minister of Maritime Susi Pudjiastuti.

The former East Belitung Regent has other proposition. The project had been initiated since the former President Soeharto's administration with the Presidential Decree Year 1995.

"It is debatable. I think the permit for the reclamation of 17 islands have been available since 1995 through the Presidential Decree. Which one is higher, Presidential Decree or Minister Regulation? That's the logic," Ahok stated at the City Hall,  Medan Merdeka Selatan, Central Jakarta, Friday (6/5/2015).

He stated that reclamation project equipped with Presidential Decree does not require permission from KKP. He considered that the previous permission automatically denies the new regulation.

"The decree was made during Mr. Harto's regime, was it published without the consideration of his environmental minister? The maritime? It is available. Let's just follow the rules," he affirmed.

The husband of Veronica Tan denies that he is taking side with one of the property developer companies at the 17 islands reclamation project. Ahok claimed the project is meant to free Jakarta from flooding. Meanwhile,  reclamation is ongoing at several islands, whereas from the 17, nine islands belong to the Jakarta Provincial Government.
